We have been in a severe drought for several months now. Broward County has been at least 10 inches below normal rainfall since January and it's been really brown and dry around here. My grass looks and feels like straw. They weren't even predicting any rain until Friday when we had a 50% chance. Then VERY early this morning around 5 or 6 AM I awoke to the sound of thunder. I was soooooo happy because it was also POURING! YAYAYAY!!!! I had fallen asleep on the couch watching TV and so I rolled over and went right back to sleep again. I have no idea what time it was when I woke up to go to the bathroom and realized that my poor Baxter was outside the door whining every time a thunderclap sounded. So I laid down in the bed hoping to calm him down. The dog was so terrified he was not only whining, his whole body was shaking like a leaf!!! Poor baby! So I started petting him and talking to him telling him it was all right. Steve said "I've been trying to do that for an hour now!" Guess I was sleeping pretty soundly huh? :) Well, it stormed and raged for at least another hour before it finally calmed down. And just like a little baby, about the time Baxter would start to calm down, here comes another thunderclap. But unlike a little child I couldn't tell him what my Daddy used to tell us about the man on the bridge with the sack of potatoes that broke open. The thunder was the potatoes hitting the bridge. The rain was the water splashing when the potatoes hit the water, and the lightning was him using his flashlight to find the potatoes! Nope. Baxter wouldn't understand that! So I cuddled and petted and talked and massaged this dog for over an hour until he finally calmed down and I finally fell asleep again. I must've been tired because I woke up a couple of hours later and said something to Steve about Baxter. He said "I put him in his kennel." It must have REALLY been bad because the kennel was still in the car from our trip! So Steve would have had to go out in the rain to get the kennel, bring it in and get the door closed all without Baxter making a move for the door. Oh yeah. It was thundering and raining. He won't go outside then. Hehe! Sad thing is I never heard a sound!
Now the sun is shining and I see a few more ripe mangoes on the tree. But there's still some clouds around and Bax is still VERY nervous so I guess that means it's gonna be a wild day for me! Silly dog!

Poor Baxter!! Our chocolate Lab, Macey, who we lost last year, was terrified of storms. We called her "out barometer" because we knew when a storm was coming by her actions. We never did get her over her fear (she lived to be 10). Good luck! :)
LOL - I didn't mean "out barometer" I meant "our barometer" - my eyes or fingers (or both) aren't working very well today!!
