I have a bird feeder in my back yard and love watching the variety of birds come enjoy my generosity. Lately, however, I've had to cut back a lot on the feeding because the squirrel and a bunch of pigeons and doves have tried to take over. So today when I put some food out and nothing came, I was keeping a close eye on things. Normally we get two different kinds of wild parrots as well as blue jays and cardinals. The parrots are tons of fun to watch and they're pretty loud when they arrive. Yesterday there were 7 at one time on the feeder and pole! They kept flying by and squawking but not one landed on the feeder. But I couldn't see any cats, squirrels or pigeons so I was puzzled. THEN as I was letting my dog out the back door I looked up and saw this huge hawk hanging out on the electrical wire!!

I made the dog come right back in because I didn't want her to scare him off. I don't think he would have messed with my 35 pound dog, but you never know! As I was running through the house, Steve was really curious and when he saw him he said "Come to the window to take the picture!" I had to lean over the sink and zoom in as far as it would let me. Then I cropped a lot of the stuff around him out. The funny thing was that the pair of mockingbirds were totally harrassing him!!! They finally chased him off or I would have had a much better picture. Who knew that hawks would hang out in suburbia!!! And such a large one at that! He's almost as big as some of the eagles I've seen in Alaska!! At least now I know what to look for next time no bird comes around! And I'll have my camera ready too!
